Salt Pools
In recent years, salt pools have become much more popular in residential pools due to the lower amount of chemical maintenance required compared to a traditional chlorine pool. It goes without saying that one of the best things can do to reduce the amount of time spent balancing your water in your pool is to install an automatic salt chlorination system.
Contrary to popular belief, it is important to understand that salt pools DO contain chlorine! When salt is dissolved in water, it disassociates into powerful chloride ions that are able to sanitize your pool to keep it clear and safe to swim in.
Even after converting your pool to a salt chlorination system, it is still very important to regularly test and balance your pool to ensure the chemical levels are within safe parameters.
Salt Pool Advantages:
- Softer water
- Automatic sanitation (no green pools!)
- Easy operation
- Less maintenance
- Save money on chemicals
- Improved water quality
- Less contact with harsh chemicals
Salt Pool Disadvantages:
- Easy to over-chlorinate pool
- Faster corrosion in pool equipment
- Must replace salt cell every 4-7 years
- Complicated systems may require extra service
How it Works:
Converting from a chlorine pool to a salt pool is possible and safe for all pools. A salt system consists of 2 main components: A control board and a salt cell. The control board is the brain of the system, and where the user sets the chlorine output. The salt cell is made up of special metal plates, that when powered, will disassociate the chloride ions out of the salt in the water.
With proper installation techniques, it is possible to minimize the corrosion potential in pool equipment. GBI Pool Services Inc. will bond the existing pool equipment to an anode as part of the installation process to protect it.
